Fleeing into Darfur?

For those who don’t know, Darfur is a place that people have leaving in droves. Arab thugs have been killing every black man that they can find in Darfur. Naturally, the residents of Darfur who posses a personal coloration darker then the average Arab have fled the area. So when I saw the headline that said “Desperate Chadians flee into Darfur“, I was puzzled.

Chadians are as dark skinned as anyone under the sun. Why would they be running towards the Arab militias?

When things seem bizarre, you can usually blame a bureaucrat. And this case is no exception, though you would think you would be safe from bureaucrats out in the middle of Africa.

You see, the Arab militias have been crossing border into Chad to continue their little killing spree. Naturally, this has been as hard on the Chadians as it was on the black residents of Darfur. But the people of Chad cannot get any help from the UN camps that are located in Chad.

Why? According to this article in The Times…

International protocol does not permit the displaced to enter the camps, and they could not go back to their destroyed homes. So the villagers sat down where they were, outside the camp, clinging to its fringes for safety.

That was three months ago and they are still there, with no food, no clean water, and only straw huts for shelter.

In other words, the UN camps will give you food and clean water only if you can prove that you have crossed a border. Never mind the fact that the people who are killing the Chadians have crossed the border. They are still internally displaced people, not refugees.

The Chadians may be primitive, but they can figure out the system. If you are starving because your crops have been burned, and you have no real hope of ever being able to replant as long as the Arab tribes are on the rampage, then you need some other way of getting fed. If the UN won’t feed you because you are internally displaced, then why not try your chances across the border were at least you will be consider a refuge. True, that is fleeing towards the Arabs, but since the Arabs seem to rampaging unchecked in Chad anyway, what do they have to lose?

Anyway, that seems to be their reasoning….

So great is the gulf between what the refugees have and what the displaced do not, that thousands of desperate Chadians have fled across the border to Darfur, into the very centre of the storm that drove them from their homes. “I understand why you might do that,” Adem said. “It is better to be a refugee than to be displaced in your own land.”

Of course the French are not helping the situation (This from the Independent)…..

Details of the three-day operation – the extent of which had been kept secret by the French army chief of staff – were obtained by The Independent after a United Nations emergency mission traveled to Birao, which is on the Sudan border.

“We found a ghost town,” said Toby Lanzer, UN humanitarian affairs co-ordinator for CAR. “It was like Grozny or parts of Mogadishu. Seventy per cent of buildings were burnt and only about 600 civilians were left. They were in a dazed state. They have nothing.

“We urgently need to carry out aerial reconnaissance to find out where the rest of the population has gone. We have traced 2,000 to camps in Darfur. That people should choose to flee into Darfur gives a measure of how terrified they must have been.”

The French were a big help in Rwanda too.

Bashing the French is a good way of reliving stress, but the situation still makes me sick. Your average blue collar male would say that we should not care. That it is not our fault and there is nothing we can do but to let them kill each other.

But while the “stay out of others peoples troubles” argument has a certain amount of appeal to me, the fact is that we are all involved with Sudan whether we want to be or not. If it were not for oil, the Sudanese Arabs would not have the weapons that they have. The very fact that the world buys oil off of Sudan favors the Arabs over their victims.

We shall not go unpunished. There is a rough justice that works throughout history. The very fact that we now depended on various murderous regimes to keep oil prices low contains the seeds of our punishment.

We shall pay at the pump.
