I know this wasn’t your reason for posting the article, but the myth that people can only stay in anechoic chambers for around an hour always annoys me.
As far as I can tell, for Microsoft’s anechoic chamber, the closest there is for any evidence for that myth is some guy at Microsoft claiming that “the longest anyone has stayed inside their chamber is about 55 minutes.” However this is from an article that also admits there is no competition running to see who can stay in there the longest. Microsoft’s anechoic chamber was built for testing various kinds of sound equipment; there is no reason employees would be hanging out in there for extended periods of time. But to phrase it as “unable to withstand” being in there for longer than that is completely bogus.
As for other anechoic chambers (which for all practical purposes are equally silent as the one at microsoft) people have proved time and time again that as long as you don’t have claustrophobia or some similar issue, it is ridiculously easy to stay in there for more than in hour. The only limiting factor that I’ve been able to find is that aside from taking a nap, there’s not much to do in there, and some people don’t handle boredom well regardless of how quiet their surroundings are.
At least the article you posted didn’t repeat the even more ridiculous claim that being in an anechoic chamber for more than an hour will actually affect your sanity.
