Who in the US has been lobbying for this base? Left, right or center I don’t understand what anyone would want it for and the stated reason is too stupid for words (a base that is an hour from China is a base that China can flatten anytime they want especially when it is in hostile territory where they can easily sponsor others to take pot shots at for little cost). Yet somehow Trump is on campaign to get it back. Taliban rejects US attempt to return to Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base

About a third of total financing outlays by the Bank in 2023-2024 went to projects tagged as having some climate component. The data suggests that the World Bank continues to use its financial and advisory leverage to mislead low-income countries into incurring debts to disproportionately finance mitigation projects, rather than climate adaptation and investments in reliable and affordable energy access.

The abuse of residents is a long standing issue. On the other paw, the extra money to pay residents has to come from somewhere I don’t know that people all cheering for this really want to pay more for health care. Why are the hospitals only paying $55k if the role is so important?

How a corruption scandal and power struggle in the Z-blogosphere could paralyze the Russian military’s grassroots funding pipeline

I have a paper with Cailin Slattery and Will Nober studying transportation construction in California. We assemble data on the individual engineers involved in transportation projects. What we found shifted my views about the basic issues that drive up costs. First, we found that when an extra 1% of state engineers retire, costs go up by 4.5%, which is a big effect. If you increase the quality of engineers working for the state from the 25th to the 75th percentile, that results in huge cost savings. The savings are three times the amount it costs to hire one of these engineers.

This research suggests that an increase in administrator pay is a more likely cause of the negative correlation with student achievement.
