You won’t believe how much money colleges make on rejected applications
Flights From Syrian Base Fell Sharply After U.S. Strike. I don’t know what I am more tired of, the pro-war crowd acting like this was some great thing or the anti-war crowd buying every thing the Russians say. Most of you probably don’t read much of the anti-war crowd so you most likely don’t know what I am talking about. If I can ever find a somewhat verifiable account of the Russia side of the story I will link to it. But mostly the Russians seem stuck on saying things that are provably not true and thus give the pro-war crowd a chance to write articles like the above.
The Dark Secret at the Heart of AI. All I could think when reading this story that is doing its best to scare you is when is the technology going to come to computer games?

I don’t think most of the stuff I read today has much general interest. But for what it is worth, here are the highlights of what I read today….

Bogus News Story Of The Day
From world champions to humbling defeat against Under 15s side… World Cup-winning USA women’s team suffer 5-2 loss against Dallas academy boys. The story is not bogus per say. The problem is that it is in the news. I say the same kind of headline with the Australian female team lost to a boys team in their country. The fact that these things are news shows how unrealistic their views on the relative differences between males and females are.

Salt grinders are bullshit, and other lessons from growing up in the spice trade . A lot of too cool for school swearing, but I found this interesting anyway.
Not In The News But Should Be
February 2017 MBE bar scores collapse to all-time record low in test history. In case you could not figure it out, the reason this should be in the news is that it shows that law schools are taking money from people and pushing them out completely unable to do the job they went to school for. I don’t think this general problem is only limited to law schools. More detailed commentary here.

Why F.E.A.R.’s AI is still the best in first-person shooters. Never played F.E.A.R. But the lack of AI development does seem to be one of the biggest flaws of modern games.
I don’t feel like doing things today so here is what I got.
Police as Oppressors: the Filipino Case. To a certain extent, I don’t think it is fair to pick on the police. As is pointed out in the comments, the resistance almost exclusively came from the rural areas. Still, if you take it as a broader point about human nature it is dead on.
The Living Dead. I admire the various different ways this guy took to try to prove he was not dead. Not sure they all would have occurred to me.
U.S. Cruise Missiles Struck Syrian Base With Impressive Precision. Not sure I would call it impressive. Posting this mostly because I posted a more cynical take yesterday. It is true that if they performed as bad as the Russians say it should be easy for them to produce the evidence. So I am guessing the Russians are not telling the truth. At million dollars a pop I expect them to hit their targets, I am just not sure the targets were worth hitting even in the narrow military sense.
A Liberal Talking Point Put to Rest. The partisan headline aside, it was interesting to note (and a little bit scary) that America really is becoming more divided by geography.
Never ending story

Bogus News Story Of The Day
Syria: The Siren Song of War. I don’t think the blog post link is bogus. Rather it is a good commentary on a how fast everyone in American forgets. We have removed quite a few evil dictators from the middle east in the last couple of decades. But you would be hard pressed to show that we made it a better place. One thing I wished developed more is the hypocrisy of thinking it is worse for him to kill children with gas then barrel bombs (which has been going on right along).
