The most dangerous thing about an evil ideology is that it makes us think that we are justified in doing anything that opposes an evil ideology. We often forget how the evils of communism caused people to turn a blind eye to the evils of fascism. And how the evils of fascism caused people to turn a blind to the evils of communism.

There is not better example of how this moral blindness work’s then the young George Orwell. As this essay reminds us, young Orwell fought for a group of murderous communists in the name of freedom.

It is no good knowing your history if you are willfully blind to the lessons that it gives. Victor Davis Hanson has a Ph.D. in the Classics from Stanford University, so he knows his history. But as “Spengler” demonstrates in this week’s “essay of the week” that does not stop Hanson from being willfully blind to the lessons that history offers.

“Spengler” published this essay a year ago, but it still stands as a valid rebuke to those who believe that we can cure the world’s ills by spreading democracy.
